A Word of Apology

Friends, neighbors, county residents…

We are SO sorry for the din, the racket, the ceaseless noise coming from here on the hill.

We are not torturing anyone or anything, we are not conducting any type of horrible experiment, nor are we testing the decibel level tolerated by the human ear. We are simply weaning the lambs.

For the next two or three days, the sporadic noise will be alarming. The lambs will be fine, the ewes are already fine, and hopefully Tom and I will come through with our hearing and sanity intact.

The lambs are separated from their mothers so that the mothers can regain their physical condition before breeding time arrives in the late summer/early fall. The lambs have received all the nutrition they needed from their mothers’ milk, they are entirely able to eat grain and grass and no longer need their “mommies”.

I know that in some ways we seem mean and heartless for this separation, but to our minds it is necessary for the health and well-being of the ewes. Ultimately, the lambs benefit as well, as they do not have to compete with the larger animals for their share of the grass and grain.

The ewes went back to grazing as soon as the lambs were gone.

The lambs were fine in their own paddock.

It was not until they returned to the barn for water that they began to complain. I gave them grain and that worked momentarily.

They finished up and went back to yelling.

They yelled one at a time, in stereo, in unison, and in stereophonic sound.

It will not be pleasant for the next few days.

Thanks for understanding!
