About Us

Homestead Hill Farm is the life and livelihood of Tom and Barbara Womack.

Growing healthy food for our own use has been a way of life for more years than we care to count. I think I planted my first seed when I was just three years old. Tom ("the Boss" in my blog) was gardening long before we met.

In 1997, we found ourselves on this piece of land in Middlebrook, Virginia, looking for a way to support ourselves and our two young daughters. Following advice from friends, we turned our attention to selling our farm products at the  Staunton Farmers' Market and we have never looked back.

2016 will mark our 19th year as full-time vendors at the Market.  Tom has been the Market Manager for the Saturday Market since 2005.

While vegetables are by far our most profitable crop, chicken and eggs are in great demand.  Our small flock of sheep keeps the grass mowed and provides the most delicious lamb chops that any non-vegetarian has ever eaten.

Direct marketing has made me acutely aware of the lack of connection between the farm and the plate.  I began blogging back in 2009 in hopes of putting a face on our farm and helping to restore that connection.

I love growing things, living on a small farm and telling the stories of our life here in rural Virginia.  Here's hoping you'll follow our FARM BLOG as we continue to learn and grow here in our little corner of the beautiful  Shenandoah Valley.

It is one of my greatest hopes that by sharing our stories...the good, the bad and the ugly...that we will somehow make a difference...that we can begin to bridge that gap between agriculture and urbanity.

You can find us in Downtown Staunton at the Market on Saturday mornings April 'til Thanksgiving.

We're on FACEBOOK,  Flickr, and Pinterest, too.

But, most of the time, you'll find us in the barn or the garden having a great time making a living doing what we love.
