My uncle was a diary farmer. He always had a huge truck garden, and my mother would always take us over to help out with the gardening and canning in return for some. In my memory, we always spent the hottest part of the summer canning - mostly tomatoes and green beans. And this was in the days before central air conditioning, so it was miserable work.
